Travel to the Rif, land of mountains and Berbers following the traces of a glorious past Almoravid and Almohad through the cities of Tangier, Asilah, Tetouan and Chaouen that had great importance in the expansion of Al’Andalus and that retain the Andalusian flavor and numerous traces of a common past. We will also take the opportunity to discover the Spanish influence left during the protectorate, for example in Larache, the most important port in the Spanish area. Tour itinerary
Day 1 : PORT OR AIRPORT OF TANGER – ASILAH:
Reception at the port or airport of Tangier according to arrival time with a sign with the name of our agency Venamarruecos. On the way to Asilah we visit the lighthouse of Cabo Espartel and remember the Greek mythology in the grottoes of Hercules where we can have lunch in some of the beach bars in the area and enjoy its beaches. We continue to Asilah by the coastal road, arrival and reception at the hotel. We stroll through the small medina of Asilah, white and blue, bordering the walls built by the Almohad and centuries later fortified by the Portuguese who occupied the city for a century, we arrived at the marine cemetery next to the marabout of Sidi Ahmd Ibn Musa. We leave the medina by Bab Homar where the market is installed. Dinner at leisure, hotel accommodation.
Day 2: ASILAH – LIXUS – LARACHE:
After breakfast, free time for a last stroll through the medina or the beach of Asilah, before leaving for nearby Larache, at the mouth of the Lucus River, a city with a very Spanish character, as evidenced by the castle Store, a fortification overlooking the bay, built by Spaniards in the seventeenth century. Likewise, we find the Spanish imprint everywhere, from the Place de la Liberation, known as the Spanish square, to the menus of the restaurants. Afternoon visit to the ruins of the Roman acropolis of Lucus, founded by the Phoenicians around 1100 BC, possibly as the first trading post in North Africa. Dinner and hotel accommodation.
Day 3: LARACHE – CHAOUEN:
In the morning after breakfast we will go to Chaouen, but first making a small detour to see the Cromlech of M’Soura with its 167 menhirs, one of the oldest human remains in the area. Further on, we take the crossroads on the right towards Souk Khemis des Beni Arrous. Arrival in Chaouen and reception at the hotel. Lunch and free afternoon to discover the “holy city of the Rif Mountains”.
Day 4: CHAOUEN – CHAOUEN:
After breakfast, free day with the possibility of a guided tour of the city. Chaouen, settled on the slopes of Jbel Tissouka, offers the traveler an exciting journey through a maze of narrow streets, in it we penetrate through Bab al-Harmum in the Suiqa neighborhood, the oldest of the city with its artisans and merchants. We arrive at the Uta Hamman square which houses the fountain, the Great Mosque, the Alcazaba with the local museum, the Funduq and numerous terraces of cafes where tourists and locals mingle in a relaxed atmosphere. We enter the Andalusian quarter, built to welcome the second wave of Moors after 1492; going up its steep and whitewashed streets we reach the edge of the fortified enclosure, Bab al-Ansar, beyond, the “Ras al-Ma” spring that supplies water to the fountains of the medina and allows the operation of the public washing place and the mills on the left bank, which we border to reach a charming bridge where we finish the tour. Also enjoy the original and magnificent leather crafts and other products made by the craftsmen of the city. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 5: CHAOUEN – TETUAN:
We arrive in Tetouan, we have lunch in the Medina entering through Bab el-Rouah next to the royal palace, going up Al-Mokaden street, an area of stores and artisans we arrive at the Zawiya Sidi Ali Barka, further up Bab el-Mqbar gives us passage to the cemetery of the Andalusians where stands the mausoleum of the Grenadian Sidi al-Mandri who rebuilt the city in the fifteenth century. We started our way out to Bab el-Oqla, dinner and hotel accommodation.
Day 6: TETUAN – TANGER:
Free morning, option to visit the archaeological museum, the museum of popular arts or the School of traditional arts and crafts. Free lunch and transfer to Tangier, embarkation in the afternoon. Arrival in Tangier where we start the visit as soon as we leave the port, going up the “beach street” where we find one of the most precious buildings of the colonial era, the “Teatro Cervantes” in a sad state of abandonment. Then we arrived at the market of the small souk and the square of the great souk, the nerve center of the city that gives us entrance to the medina with its streets full of artisans, bazaars, cafes and street stalls that we walk until we reach the Kasbah, noble and high part of the medina where we taste the traditional cuisine enjoying beautiful views of the Strait, Tangier and its bay. On the way to the Café Hafa where we will take mint tea remembering Bowles and others, we visit the Phoenician necropolis and at sunset, dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 : TANGER – TANGER :
Breakfast and free time to continue visiting the city and transfer to the port or airport according to departure time.
